OpenAI’s wellness council, formed after a minor’s suicide linked to ChatGPT, voted unanimously against the company’s plan to introduce an adult mode in January. Council members warned that AI‑powered erotica could foster unhealthy emotional dependence and allow minors to access sex chats. The council was created in October following backlash over the first known case of a minor’s suicide involving ChatGPT. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman announced the upcoming adult mode on X the same day the council was formed. Experts, including Sewell Setzer III and Mark Cuban, expressed concerns that the feature could create “sexy suicide coaches” for vulnerable users. The council does not include a suicide prevention expert, yet it remains alarmed by the potential risks of the erotica feature.
